Do Funny Video Ads Actually Work? How Humor Helps Businesses Get Remembered

QUICK ANSWER

The best educational videos for a business usually come from questions customers already ask. Start with the things buyers need to understand before making a decision: how something works, what it costs, what to expect, how options differ, what mistakes to avoid and how to know when they need help.

The goal isn’t simply to get a laugh.

It’s to make the business harder to forget.

Think about the commercials you still remember from years ago.

There’s a good chance at least one of them made you laugh.

Now think about the perfectly polished ads you scrolled past this morning.

Remember any?

Exactly.

Humor can be powerful in video because it breaks the expected pattern. It gives someone a reason to stop.

But funny isn’t automatically effective.

If people laugh and can’t remember who the business was, what it sells or why they should care, you created entertainment.

Not marketing.

Why can humor work so well in advertising?

Nobody opens Instagram hoping a plumbing company interrupts them with an advertisement.

People are looking for things they want to watch.

Something beautiful. Interesting. Useful. Unexpected. Emotional. Or funny.

When a video looks and sounds exactly like an ad from the first second, the viewer knows what is happening.

And that thumb is ready.

Humor gives you an opportunity to interrupt the pattern.

An unexpected visual. A painfully familiar customer situation. A strange character. A clever line. Something slightly absurd.

For just a second, the viewer thinks: “Wait—what is this?”

That second matters.

Because nobody can remember your marketing if they never stopped long enough to notice it.

Does every business need funny advertising?

No.

Humor is a creative tool, not a marketing requirement.

“How can we make our company funny?”

It’s:

“Would humor make this idea more interesting and memorable?”

Sometimes the answer is absolutely.

Other times, the message needs trust, emotion, aspiration or clarity instead.

A deeply personal founder story probably doesn’t need a punchline.

A serious customer situation may call for empathy.

But pest control?

Plumbing?

Restaurants?

Hospitality?

Real estate?

Professional services with a problem everyone recognizes but nobody wants to talk about?

There can be a lot of creative territory there.

Can a serious business use humor without looking unprofessional?

Yes.

Funny and credible are not opposites.

Bad humor and credibility are.

The smartest humorous ads often make the situation funny while allowing the business to remain the competent one.

Imagine a plumber showing the increasingly ridiculous things a homeowner tries before finally admitting it’s time to call someone.

The homeowner’s behavior is funny.

The problem is recognizable.

The plumber still looks like an expert.

The viewer laughs because they’ve either done it themselves—or know someone who absolutely would.

Then the business becomes part of the memory.

That’s humor doing a job.

The brand has to survive the joke

Here’s the test.

After watching the video, can the viewer answer:

• Who was that?
• What do they do?
• What was the point?
• Why should I care?
• What should I do next?

If the joke overwhelms the business, you may have created a funny video.

You haven’t necessarily created a good ad.

At Salt & Viva, humor still needs strategy behind it.

The objective is to make someone stop, feel and act.

Sometimes “feel” means desire.

Sometimes surprise.

Sometimes trust.

And sometimes it’s a laugh they didn’t expect from a company in your category.

The funniest ideas usually have some truth underneath them

Great humor often begins with recognition.

The homeowner who ignores a suspicious noise for six months.

The restaurant guest who says, “I’ll just have one bite.”

The entrepreneur who decides she’s going to create 30 pieces of content before lunch.

The hotel guest negotiating checkout time like an international peace treaty.

The spouse whose DIY repair somehow involves duct tape, YouTube and absolute confidence.

People laugh because they recognize something.

That little moment of “Oh my God. That’s me.” is valuable.

You’ve created an emotional connection before you’ve asked for anything.

Funny doesn’t have to mean loud

Humor can be:

• Dry
• Clever
• Absurd
• Playful
• Unexpected
• Visual
• Self-aware
• Character-driven
• Situational
• Slightly outrageous

The kind of humor that works for a luxury hotel won’t necessarily work for a pest-control company.

That’s where creative judgment matters.

You’re not simply deciding whether to be funny.

You’re deciding what kind of funny still feels like your brand.

Should a funny ad still sell something?

Absolutely.

That doesn’t mean every video needs someone pointing at a giant “BUY NOW” button.

The action may be subtler.

A funny ad might make someone:

• Remember the company
• Share the video
• Visit the website
• Follow the brand
• Recognize a problem
• Want the experience
• Call the business
• Make a reservation
• Book a consultation

There should still be a reason the business made the video.

That’s where Salt & Viva draws the line between content that’s merely clever and content built to perform.

Because beautiful content is easy.

Funny content can be fun.

Content that gets remembered and drives decisions is the real win.
